Whilst around Liverpool, you may come across the Albert Dock and be fascinated by the ships that are offered here, however further south down into Hampshire, Portsmouth’s Historic Courtyard offers a wide variety of ships, warships and more. With this area being the Royal Navy’s biggest base for ships, it holds two thirds of the ships used, some retired and available for visiting, and some still used to this day.
Becoming a museum for the public to explore in 2013, the Mary Rose ship was used as a large part of British naval battles. Built in 1510, it was well known for being both the best ship in the force, and the favourite of King Henry VIII. Being the only ship that is on display from the 15th/16th century, it’s a fantastic opportunity for you and your group to be able to brag about to your friends back home in the Cheshire area. Though Liverpool has a fantastic line-up of ships throughout the year, non have a history like Portsmouth’s Mary Rose. After being sunk just off the coast of Portsmouth in 1545, it was finally raised from the depths 470 years later, in 1982. Not only would your group be venturing onto a sunken ship from 500 years ago, but you have the opportunity to explore its 19,000 artefacts on board.
Though built in 1859, the HMS Warrior 1860 was considered “invincible” by the public, with it being the flagship of Queen Victoria’s Fleet. Built to defend the title of Britain’s domination at sea, it was put into service immediately in an attempt to out-class the French. Being built 60% bigger than the Iron-clad “La Gloire”, the HMS Warrior was both faster, and more armed than the French equivalent. With her life short-lived, the HMS Warrior was soon put on the side-lines and replaced with swifter vessels, and was later retired before being used again. Now set aside in Her Majesty’s Naval Base, the public are able to board her and get a taste of the Victorian era’s fleet.
Being able to watch over the city of Portsmouth gives you a great perspective of the city, with great view of the Historic Waterfront, the Spinnaker Tower is a great place to enjoy the sights that are to offer, of both the city and the bay. Scaling up to 110m (360ft) it’s a great way to feel the sea breeze on the sky deck, or if you aren’t a fan of the height, there are lower viewing platforms for anyone who feels more comfortable. Just a little higher than the Liverpool Cathedral, its size is great for those looking to do some sightseeing.
