Taking its name from the heavy amount of soot coming from the industries that are located here, The Black Country is fantastic place to learn all about England’s industrial background and history.
Back when England was undergoing its Industrial Revolution between 1760-1820, the Black Country was one of the main industrial locations for Britain. With ongoing operations such as coal mines and steel mills which produced a heavy amount of air pollution, this is where the name “The Black Country” came from. Another rumour is that the name came from American Diplomat and Social Activist Elihu Burritt in his 1868 book Walks in The Black Country and its Green Borderland, describing the area as “Black by day and red by night”.
Taking a tour of the Black Country can bring perspective of its unknown range, it’s never quite been decided the size of the area. Taking up most of the boroughs of Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton there has never been a straight decision on where the Black Country starts and ends; no defined limit on its boundaries. A popular attraction of the west midlands, it’s an area that has guaranteed enjoyment whilst educating yourself on some of the most important history of England, in an era that defined the county during the Industrial Revolution.
